The Most Ven. Maha Nayake Theras of the three chapters are to submit a petition to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) soon explaining the real situation in Sri Lanka. It had been also decided to get other religious leaders to sign this petitions.
These decisions were made at a discussion held at a meeting of the Maha Sangha in Kandy yesterday. Asgiriya Chapter Maha Nayake Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakitha Thera said Sri Lankan diplomats placed in the missions abroad had failed in their duty by not educating the international community and therefore the Maha Sangha should play a role in it. Ven. Dr. Medagama Dhammananda Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter said it was the duty of the Maha Sangha to play a role in educating the international community on the real situation prevailing in the country. He said the Sangha had played a role in safeguarding the territorial integrity of the country even during the colonial period.
External Affairs Minister G. L. Peiris said UN Human Rights High Commissioner Navi Pillay had no understanding on the Sri Lankan situation. He therefore said the allegations that were made against Sri Lanka were unfair by any means.
